Consecutively structured, this comprises a bachelor programme lasting 6 semesters and a subsequent master programme of 4 semesters. On the bachelor programme, students will acquire knowledge and skills in experimental physics (mechanics, thermodynamics, electricity, optics, atomic and nuclear physics, molecule physics, solid-state physics), theoretical physics (mechanics, electrodynamics, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics and statistical physics), mathematics (analysis, linear algebra, differential equations) and in a subsidiary subject (usually chemistry or computer science). Programmes include extensive physics practicals. The bachelor degree examination comprises module examinations during the programme and the bachelor’s dissertation. On the master programme which requires successful completion of the bachelor programme, knowledge of experimental physics and theoretical physics (nuclear and particle physics, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics and statistical physics) is increased and intensified in the first year. Selected compulsory subjects take up an extensive section of the programme, introducing students, firstly, to the research fields currently being addressed at the faculty and, secondly, giving interdisciplinary schooling, This first year is followed by the one-year research phase with the master’s degree dissertation as its central element. The master’s degree examination comprises module examinations during the programme, together with the master’s dissertation and its defence.
