All students enrolled on Bachelor of Arts degree programmes (except for BA Sport Science, BA Literary Writing and BA Art Education) or the Digital Humanities BSc programme have the opportunity to study an elective subject. Depending on the degree programme, this can involve up to two elective subjects.

Registration Procedure

Generally speaking, students not allocated a place in their chosen elective subject will automatically be assigned the freely configurable elective area of the humanities and social sciences – which still allows them to study modules from the desired subject.

Students in the First Semester of Study

If you already want to study an elective subject in your first semester, please register for it prior to starting your studies at Leipzig University. Please check the Almaweb portal for all necessary information and deadlines (usually until mid-September). You can register for an elective subject via the online registration system. The deadlines for this can be found in the information you receive in the AlmaWeb portal and by email to your student email account.

Students from the Second Semester of Study

If you decide to study an elective subject after already starting your degree course, you can write an email from your student email account to the Central Study Office by no later than 15 September (for the winter semester) or 15 March (for the summer semester), detailing your request and stating your enrolment number. The Central Study Office will check the availability and inform you in good time before the start of the semester whether you can study your chosen elective subject.

Deviating Procedures

There is one exception: the registration procedure for studying Crossmedia Journalism as an elective subject, which requires separate proof of prior knowledge. For more information, please visit the website of the University’s radio station mephisto 97.6.

When you enrol, you will be given login information for your student email account. Please use this email address for all electronic communications with teachers and staff.
Remember to check your university email account regularly! Information from the University will only ever be sent to this address.

Picking an Elective Subject

You are free to combine any of the elective subjects offered with your own degree subject – with the exception of elective subjects that overlap with what you are already studying. For example, you cannot combine the elective subject British Studies with a bachelor’s degree in British Studies.

Besides elective subjects worth 60 credits, Leipzig University also offers elective subjects worth 30 credits. These are particularly suitable for students whose degree programme only requires them to earn 30 credits in the elective area. However, if your degree programme includes 60 credits in the elective area, you can also combine two elective subjects worth 30 credits each, or one elective subject worth 30 credits and modules worth 30 credits from the freely configurable elective area.

Please note: You do not have to submit proof of the language skills required for an elective subject until you start studying that elective subject.
