In its meeting on 5 May 2020, the Senate decided that students could apply for the summer semester 2020 not to be counted towards their standard period of study.

If you wish to take advantage of the opportunity to not have the summer semester 2020 count towards your standard period of study (referred to in German as the Regelstudienzeit), all you need to do is apply in the AlmaWeb portal. You do not need to give reasons. Simply select the option from the corresponding drop-down menu.

How can I apply?

  • First log in as usual to AlmaWeb.
  • Go to “Account” → “Change contact information”, where you will be shown your stored personal details.
  • Click on “Change” in the top right-hand corner. Under “Additional fields”, open the drop-down menu and select the option for not having the summer semester 2020 count towards your standard period of study.
  • The deadline for applications is 31 March 2021.

Please note that we will be unable to process your request immediately. The Student Office will periodically process requests and confirm them in our system.

Once your request has been confirmed, you will receive a notification informing you that the summer semester 2020 will not count towards your standard period of study, along with a new certificate of enrolment in your AlmaWeb messages.

If the semester does not count towards your standard period of study, this will not have any influence on your ability to earn credits and take exams.

Before you apply, we recommend that you enquire with the relevant authorities about the potential effects of not having this semester count towards your standard period of study – and the associated change in your semester of study (Fachsemester). For example, it may affect the payment of BAföG, child benefit, scholarships, orphan’s pensions and Bildungskredite (educational loans).
