As a student of Leipzig University, you have to register for modules and courses at the start of each semester. This page explains which registration systems and procedures there are, which deadlines you need to meet, and where to get support. If you are an exchange student, please note that this information may not apply to you.

Tutorial on planning your semester: sample schedule (applicable for all degree programmes)

General Information

Module registration takes place approximately two weeks prior to the start of the lecture period. To register for modules or courses, you will mainly be required to use the TOOL or AlmaWeb systems. Depending on your course of studies and area, places are allocated either on a first come, first served basis or using a set registration procedure. The course catalogue shows which modules and courses are offered in the current semester.

Please check the website of your faculty’s Study Office in advance to find out which registration periods apply for your subject.

When you register for a module, you are also automatically registered for the module examination. As a rule, it is possible to deregister from a module, and thus also from the module examination, no later than four weeks before the end of the lecture period. You do this either in TOOL or AlmaWeb or by notifying the responsible examination office in writing. If you deregister before the deadline, all examinations already completed in the module will be deemed not to have been completed. After this point, it is only possible to withdraw from examinations for exceptional reasons. The withdrawal must be declared in writing and also approved in writing by the examination board (please refer to your examination regulations for more details).

Elective Area and Key Qualifications (SQ Modules)

Details of current modules and courses can also be found in the course catalogue.

The two areas are relevant to the following courses of study:

  • Cross-faculty key qualification (SQ) modules: all Bachelor of Science (BSc) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) programmes
  • Elective area in the humanities and social sciences: solely for bachelor’s programmes in the humanities and social sciences (BA) and for the BSc in Digital Humanities. This elective area can be studied in two variants:
    • The freely configurable elective area and/or
    • The elective subject.
  • Foreign language modules of the Language Center: all Leipzig University students.

Registration procedure: Since capacity is limited for key qualifications (SQ modules), places on these modules are allocated using a multi-stage registration procedure. Please also note the information about registering for SQ modules.

1. Registration phase: This registration procedure involves an initial registration phase, during which you specify a certain number of module requests and rank them according to priority, indicating your first and second choice, etc. At the end of the registration phase, an algorithm calculates the most appropriate way to allocate places on the modules. Taking into account the overall result, all students are assigned modules with the highest possible priority.

2. Confirmation phase:  In the subsequent confirmation phase, you are usually required to confirm the modules assigned to you by selecting the courses they contain. Failure to confirm your place will mean that you forfeit your right to the allocated place.

Registration system: TOOL

Registration period:  Regardless of your field of study, the following registration period applies to cross-faculty key qualification modules.

  • Registration phase: Submit module requests
    • Wednesday, 20 March 2024 (12pm) until Monday, 25 March 2024 (5pm)

Teaching Degree Programmes

Teaching degree students take modules at different faculties. In addition to the core subjects, the Educational Sciences at the Faculty of Education and the supplementary studies at the Centre for Teacher Training and School Research (ZLS), for example, are among the overarching areas that all students have to complete. As registration periods and systems are set specifically by each faculty, it is important for teaching degree students to get an overview before module registration begins. Registration is generally on a first come, first served basis.

Please find the updated overview for registering for modules on the German website.
