In addition to the standard semester fee, which all students are required to pay, in certain cases Leipzig University levies tuition fees for long-term students and for second undergraduate degrees.

When Do Tuition Fees Apply?

In certain cases, tuition fees are charged in accordance with the Saxon Higher Education Act (SächsHSG) as well as Leipzig University’s regulations on fees and charges.

You will receive a fee notice if you have to pay tuition fees. This notice will be uploaded to your AlmaWeb account at the beginning of the re-enrolment period for the semester in question or with your provisional enrolment certificate. You will receive an email notifying you that new documents are available.

Tuition fees are charged in addition to the regular semester fee. Please remember to pay the fees on time. Failure to pay will result in exmatriculation or cancellation of your provisional enrolment.

Besides tuition fees, there is a fee of 10 euros for all first-year students for issuing the UniCard, which is charged together with the semester fee. Further information can be found on your provisional enrolment certificate.

Tuition Fees for Second Undergraduate Degrees

The tuition fees we charge for second undergraduate degrees are based on Section 13(4) of the Saxon Higher Education Act (SächsHSFG) in conjunction with Section 2(2) Sentence 1 No. 2 of Leipzig University’s regulations on fees and charges.

Current Tuition Fee for Second Undergraduate Degrees: 350 Euros per Semester

Whether you have to pay fees for your second undergraduate degree will depend on your previous degree and how long you have studied so far.

If your previous degree is a bachelor’s degree, you will not be required to pay tuition fees for a second undergraduate degree at our university.

If you have already completed a master’s, Diplom or Magister degree programme or a course of study with a state or ecclesiastical final examination, you will be required to pay tuition fees as soon as you exceed the standard period of study by more than six semesters.
As long as you do not exceed the standard period of study by more than six semesters, you do not have to pay tuition fees for a second undergraduate degree.

  • Please note that all semesters spent studying are taken into account – even those in which you were enrolled on other degree programmes after completing your studies.
  • A bachelor’s degree plus a consecutive master’s degree are regarded as a single unit. Accordingly, the standard period of study includes both degrees.
  • Students who are enrolled elsewhere but attend Leipzig University as a Nebenhörer are also required to pay fees (does not apply to students on the Teaching Degree in Music programme).

If you began your second course of study at our university in the winter semester 2017/18 or earlier, you are exempt from these rules as our university’s regulations on fees and charges do not apply to you.

Special Provisions

You are not required to pay tuition fees for a second undergraduate degree if

  • you have been granted a leave of absence. However, you can still sit examinations.
  • you are enrolled as a doctoral candidate at our university.
  • you are studying for a Teaching Degree in Music at the Academy of Music and Theatre (HMT) in cooperation with our university.

Exemption from Tuition Fees for Second Undergraduate Degrees

In justified exceptions, tuition fees for second undergraduate degrees may be waived in accordance with Section 2(2) of Leipzig University’s regulations on fees and charges. Decisions are made by a committee appointed by the University Senate. Exceptions can be made, for example, if two degrees are needed in order to practise the profession in question or if there are clear academic grounds.

If you wish to apply for an exemption, please submit your written request to the Student Office, together with supporting documents, during the re-enrolment period.
