Preparing, carrying out and completing a doctorate may raise various questions. Due to the high degree of specialisation and variation between disciplines, it is not possible to offer doctoral candidates a centralised advisory service. Instead, at Leipzig University we support doctoral candidates with individual advisory services. If you are considering pursuing a doctorate, it would be wise to find out beforehand about the extensive range of research opportunities on offer. This will require consultation with supervising professors on the subject of your doctorate.

Organising your doctorate

If you are German and interested in enrolling on a doctoral programme, you will need to use the AlmaWeb portal and can request assistance from the Student Office.

After entering your information online, please print the application form and submit it, together with the accompanying documents, to the Student Service Centre (SSZ) either by post or in person during its opening hours.

It is possible to enrol as a doctoral candidate in all courses of study offered at our university. The prerequisite for enrolment is admission to the list of doctoral candidates in accordance with the doctoral regulations, admission to a doctoral programme, or acceptance at a Graduiertenkolleg (referred to in English by the DFG as a Research Training Group). In order to be placed on the list of doctoral candidates, please submit an application to the relevant faculty explaining your intention to start a doctorate. You must do this in order to be able to apply for a doctorate at a later date. The exact procedure can be found in the respective doctoral regulations. Depending on the faculty, you must be placed on the list of doctoral candidates within a certain period prior to applying for admission or initiating the doctoral procedure.

Successful doctorates depend on a trusting relationship between doctoral candidates and their supervisors. An open, fair and transparent approach by all those involved in the doctoral process will ensure a good basis right from the start. Social and cultural backgrounds should also be taken into account, for example so that the candidate can successfully juggle family life, doctoral research and professional commitments. The supervision agreement sets forth the general conditions of the doctoral process.

A supervision agreement is mandatory for anyone wishing to join a programme class at the Research Academy Leipzig. It is intended to serve as a benchmark for all doctorates at Leipzig University.

Structured doctoral programmes are subject to the study regulations of the individual faculties. Applications for admission to structured doctoral programmes are submitted to the Graduate Commission on 26 February and 30 August. Admission is conditional on an above-average degree in the relevant academic discipline.

Being enrolled on a structured doctoral programme entitles you to apply for a scholarship under the state postgraduate funding scheme. Applications may be submitted simultaneously. The Graduate Commission decides on the award of scholarships. It is customary to take on a tutorial after the first year of study on a structured doctoral programme.

Additional Advisory Services

Equal opportunities, family-friendliness and freedom from discrimination are crucial preconditions for an innovative research culture, a stimulating teaching atmosphere, and a productive working environment. The Equal Opportunities Office at Leipzig University offers doctoral candidates an extensive range of advisory and support services.

The Office of Ombudspersons at Leipzig University oversees compliance with good academic practice, offering advice in the event of doubt or problems.

Questions concerning research ethics can also be addressed to the recently founded Ethics Advisory Board.

The Faculty of Medicine offers its doctoral researchers tailored advisory services and arbitration options.

Besides the Equal Opportunities Office, Leipzig Student Services also offers advisory and day-care services for doctoral candidates with children.

The International Centre assists doctoral researchers with preparing for research periods abroad and finding funding.

Advisory services for doctoral candidates are available from Leipzig Student Services in a collaborative project with the Faculty of Medicine. Individual consultations are possible with or without an appointment.

The University has appointed independent third parties to mediate in conflict situations involving doctorates. They are bound to secrecy with respect to third parties and can be contacted for advice and mediation.

Leipzig University Library supports doctoral candidates in their research and publication work and offers them further services. Your free library card grants you a higher borrowing limit, a longer standard borrowing period and the option of borrowing non-circulating resources on a short-term basis. Workstations are available in the workroom for doctoral students and individual work booths for 12-month reservations at various locations. The University Library also offers special workshops for doctoral students and advises on topics such as open access and publication.

The University’s Department of Research Services is responsible for research funding and application advice, transfer, and our external funding service. Its staff offer a one-stop service from application advice to project completion, combining their expertise on the rules and regulations of the various funding institutions. The Department of Research Services provides detailed information, forms and agreement templates on the intranet.
