The Studienkolleg Sachsen’s work centres on helping international students make the transition to studying at university in Germany. The long-established institution is now entering a period of change: it is moving to a new location and has developed a new strategy for the years ahead. In this interview, the head of the Studienkolleg Sachsen, Katja Brachmann, explains what will change – and what her team and international students can continue to rely on.

For generations of Leipzig University’s international students, Lumumbastraße 4 has been one of their first points of contact with the German language and with Germany. For more than 70 years, students from all over the world have learned German in this building and prepared for studying in Germany – academically, methodologically and transculturally. In spring 2027, the Studienkolleg Sachsen will leave the site and move to new premises at Grassistraße 12. To mark the departure, Studienkolleg Sachsen, the Herder Institute and interDaF e. V. are inviting people to an open house at Lumumbastraße 4 from 2pm on 10 October. For many years, the building was home to all three institutions. Members of the media are warmly invited to attend. Please register in advance.

New approach to tackling unstable vascular plaques

Atherosclerosis develops when deposits known as plaques build up in the walls of blood vessels over many years. These plaques are particularly dangerous when they become unstable and rupture: blood clots can form, blocking blood vessels and potentially causing a heart attack or stroke. A research team at the University of Leipzig Medical Center has discovered a previously unknown mechanism that contributes to plaque instability: the speed at which vascular cells transcribe their genetic information into RNA. By selectively blocking this process, the researchers were able to reduce both pathological changes in the cells and typical features of unstable plaques. The findings have been published in the renowned journal Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy.

The German Informatics Society (GI) has named Professor Erhard Rahm of Leipzig University a GI Fellow in recognition of his outstanding commitment to the GI and to computer science. In explaining its decision, the society said that Rahm had established a national and international reputation in the fields of database systems, data integration and data management. He also founded one of six interdisciplinary German competence centres for artificial intelligence and data science funded by the Federal Ministry of Research.

Two international research teams have mapped the entire central nervous system of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster for the first time. They identified similarities and differences between the sexes and also showed that the fly’s nervous system is not controlled centrally by the brain. Dr Katharina Eichler from Leipzig University’s Institute of Biology contributed to both studies, which have been published in the journals Nature and Cell. She played a leading role in reconstructing and describing the descending neurons. These nerve cells transmit commands from the brain to the body.

Connecting biodiversity, climate change, and human behaviour as a whole

Biodiversity loss and climate change are urgent challenges that humanity must address in order to safeguard the basis for human life. This can be successful only if we consider both issues together and take into account how human behaviour can both drive and tackle these problems. Because biodiversity, climate, and human behaviour have long been considered in isolation even within the scientific community, many interactions between them have so far been explored only to a limited extent. At the joint invitation of Leipzig University and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), researchers from a range of disciplines and over 30 countries will gather in Leipzig from 21 to 24 September for the Connecting Biodiversity, Climate and Human Behaviour (CBC2026) conference. They will discuss the current state of knowledge in this new field of research, identify new research topics, and expand networks at an international level.

Physicists at Leipzig University and Charles University in Prague have developed a method for changing the swimming style of tiny artificial microswimmers in real time. They can make a single microscopic particle switch at will between modes of swimming inspired by bacteria and algae. The researchers have thus turned a property that was previously fixed during production into a programmable parameter. They believe their findings pave the way for an evolutionary approach to the development of synthetic active matter. Their study has now been published in Nature Communications.

The first adaptation course for midwives who trained outside the European Union has been successfully completed. The midwives were given an official send-off at Leipzig University on 15 September. The women, who come from Ukraine, Serbia, Kosovo and Iran, each followed an individually tailored programme reflecting differences in national education systems, medical standards and legal requirements. In recognition of the high quality of its training, the Institute of Midwifery Science and Interprofessional Perinatal Medicine has successfully been certified as an education and training provider. The second adaptation course, which began on 1 September, will be expanded to other federal states. The pilot project was supported by the Saxon State Ministry for Social Affairs, Health and Social Cohesion.
