Answering to the Rectorate, the Department of University Communications sees itself internally and externally as a service unit for the whole University in the areas of press and media relations, events, and alumni/relationship management.
Taking university communications seriously
Our primary task is to communicate the strategic goals and services of our alma mater as well as how the University sees itself. We want to attract students, scholars, friends and sponsors, involve Leipzig University in the city and region, and heighten its national and international visibility. To this end, we disseminate clear messages and information about the University in a variety of media and event formats.
We offer target group-specific services for our communication partners inside and outside the University. We work hand in hand on Leipzig’s external and internal presentation in order to create a uniform university brand, with new facets continually being added.
We pay attention to the internal and external impact of what we do and endeavour to act responsibly, carefully, sustainably and transparently. In our dynamic field of work, we recognise the importance of continuing professional development as well as internal and external networks, especially with other higher education institutions.
As a university communications team, we see ourselves as facilitators who provide important overarching transfer services and promote identification with our university.
Our structure and what we do
The Department of University Communications has divided its tasks into the following key areas:
The media team keeps the general public informed of the latest events at Leipzig University and is also responsible for internal communications. We are the central point of contact for all media enquiries and assist our university’s scholars in preparing and disseminating up-to-date information in a way that is appropriate for the respective media and target groups.
With an employee newsletter and our online magazine LUMAG, we inform university staff about current events at Leipzig and give them the opportunity to interact.
We are responsible for liaising with the press, editorial work for our website and intranet, corporate publishing, internal communications and the University’s social media profiles.
Press and Internal Communications Team
Social Media Team
On behalf of the Rectorate, our team organises formal and central university events such as the matriculation ceremony and the Dies academicus, and works with the Department of Planning and Technical Services to coordinate use of the Paulinum – Assembly Hall and University Church of St. Paul. We advise university faculties and institutions on preparing events. If you are interested in planning an event at or with the University, especially at the Augustusplatz campus, we will put you in touch with the relevant contact person within the University. Working with strategic partners including the City of Leipzig and other institutions, we also coordinate the University’s participation in major events such as Museum Night and the Long Night of the Sciences.
Information desk in the Neues Augusteum
The information desk in the Neues Augusteum is a central point of contact for visitors. Come here for answers to questions about the campus at Augustusplatz and the University in general and to discuss student-related issues. The desk also sells university merchandise, including pens, mugs and T-shirts.
Our friendly and competent team of students provides information about the University. This includes information about events, room allocation, the history of the University as well as putting visitors in touch with the right contact persons. Our own publications about Leipzig University, such as flyers and area maps, are available from the information desk. It is possible to order or borrow information material and banner displays in-house.

Monday to Thursday:
We pursue the goal of constantly improving our university’s services and strengthening our own competitiveness compared to other institutions of higher education. We work with a close and ever-growing network of sponsors and friends, alumni, companies and foundations. To promote not just the University but also Leipzig itself as a centre for science and education, it is important that former members share their own wealth of experience and appreciate their role as ambassadors for their alma mater. Similarly essential is support in the form of financial and material resources as well as services and human resources. Our university strives for positive and long-term partnerships for the development of teaching and research activities and to promote committed junior staff.
Our tasks include ongoing public relations work with regard to the latest research and teaching topics at the Faculty of Medicine as well as promoting internal and external communications. We arrange expert speakers, coordinate press appointments and issue filming and photography permits for the Faculty of Medicine.
