Night owls are in good hands in Leipzig

Leipzig has a lot to offer by night as well as by day. Several streets of bars compete directly for night owls’ custom.

In the city centre most locals frequent the many bars around Barfußgässchen and Große Fleischergasse. This area has been affectionately christened “Drallewatsch” by the locals, which roughly translates as “wandering from bar to bar”. The popular jazz and music club Spizz is also here.

And the theatre quarter around Gottschedstraße is very popular in the evenings. As well as the Central Theater, most of the restaurants, trendy bars, cafes and cocktail bars in the trade fair mecca are here. The “MagaPon” launderette has been transformed into a cult bar. It is the first bar in Gottschedstraße, and became famous as the backdrop for the TV series “Tatort”.

Most of the student bars and clubs are to be found in Südvorstadt and in Connewitz. For example, in Karl-Liebknecht Straße, known by locals simply as “Karli”, you will find popular and unique meeting places such as the Volkshaus, the naTo and the Café Puschkin. Connewitz has the cultural centre conne island and the house and techno temple Distillery. The best-known Leipzig student club is the Moritz-Bastei, known to students as MB, which is located in the only remaining section of the Leipzig city wall. In summer the roof of the MB is also used to stage theatrical performances and concerts and as an open-air cinema. In autumn the premises are one of the venues for the Leipzig Jazz Days Festival.
