City of sport Leipzig

Active Leipzigers

Leipzig is a sporty city: 78 types of sport are carried out in more than 300 sports clubs and associations. There are just as many sports venues spread around the city, about 400 altogether.

Students can also engage in sporting activities in the sports complex of the university’s sports science faculty. And the city offers many ways to keep fit outside the clubs and the university. For example, Leipzig has many indoor and outdoor swimming pools, and to the south and the east of the city is Neuseenland (New Lake District). Its many lakes offer optimal sailing, diving and surfing conditions.

Many locals go to the greenbelt recreation area to walk, cycle, ride or inline-skate. And there are many waterways and canals within the city itself, such as the Elster between Südvorstadt and Schleußig, or the Karl-Heine Canal, best discovered by rowing boat or canoe. Lake Kulkwitz, which is full of fish, is also very popular with locals for diving. And joggers, cyclists and Nordic walkers will find lovely routes in the Rosental, on the Elster flood plain and in the Johanna and Clara-Zetkin parks.
