Steffi Marung is director of the Global and European Studies Institute of Leipzig University and PI of “’Free radicals’? Political mobilities and post-colonial processes of re-spatialization in the second half of the 20th century“ at the Collaborative Research Centre (SFB) 1199 at Leipzig University.


Specializing on global connections of Eastern Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries, she teaches global history at Leipzig and Addis Ababa University. Holding a PhD in Global Studies from Leipzig University, she studied political science and German literature in Halle, Berlin and Prague. Currently, her research addresses more broadly socialist mobilities of activists and experts from Eastern Europe and the Global South during the 20th century, as well as debates on international development with a focus on the "agrarian question", while she works on a book project investigating Soviet African Studies during the Cold War.

  • PhD Working Group "Global and Transnational History" (with Matthias Middell)

    As part of the teaching program at the Graduate School Global and Area Studies at Leipzig University, this working group provides PhD students room for presenting their exposés and draft chapters to receive peer-to-peer feedback in addition to advice provided by senior researchers at GESI and ReCentGlobe.


    Takes place every term (4 times as bloc sessions)

  • Introduction into Global History (with Matthias Middell)

    Combining a lecture with a reading course, it introduces into major themes and approaches as well as challenges of writing global history. It also addresses the relation between historical approaches to the study of global entanglements with other disciplinary perspectives on the study of globalization.

  • Global Crises on the Ground: Economy, Health and Energy in the Twentieth Century (with Corinne Geering)

    The COVID-19 pandemic has shown how global crises affect places and people differently across the world. This seminar inquires into global inequalities by discussing major crises of economy, health and energy in the twentieth century. Students engage with digitized primary source material and with strategies of history writing and historiographical storytelling in the form of both text and audio, by also producing a podcast themselves.

  • Global history of international development: Ideas, actors and international organizations in the 20th century

    Covering the period between the 1930s to the early 21st century, this seminar introduces into visions and practices of international development. It addresses specific actors and organizations as the agents and arenas for how development is filled with meaning and translated into practices and projects. Students work in teams on selected international organizations. In these teams they turn at the end of the semester into “delegations” for a simulated international conference.
