Kurzprofil

Geert Castryck ist Historiker mit Schwerpunkt in afrikanischer und Globalgeschichte. Er forscht vorwiegend zu Ost- und Zentralafrika aus globaler und transregionaler Perspektiven, und hat zu afrikanischer Stadtgeschichte, zu Islam in Ost- und Zentralafrika, zu Kolonialismus, und zur Kolonialerbe veröffentlicht.

Er hat in Geschichte promoviert an der Universität Gent mit einer Arbeit zu Islam in Bujumbura (Burundi) während der Kolonialzeit. Seit 2010 arbeitet er an der Universität Leipzig, zunächst am Institut für Afrikastudien und am Centre for Area Studies, und seit 2016 im Sonderforschungsbereich 1199 “Processes of Spatialization under the Global Condition” (SFB 1199). Im Jahr 2015-2016 hat er die Professur in Geschichte Afrikas an der Universität Gent vertreten.

Er arbeitet zurzeit an eine globale Stadtgeschichte von Kigoma/Ujiji (heute Tansania) sowie an eine Geschichte der Neuverräumlichungen in Ost- und Zentralafrika sowie in Europa während und nach der Kolonisierung Afrikas.
