Soft Matter Physics
Summer Term 2013

This master module for both the German and the international physics studies program (IPSP) comprises 4 SWS lectures and 2 SWS exercises/seminars. The lectures will be held in English language. There will be lab courses in place of the regular lecture and seminar times. Please see the detailed schedule for this module.

There will not be any homework exercises to hand in. However, every student has to give a talk in the seminar in order to attend the final exam at the end of the term.

ATTENTION: The written exam will take place on Tuesday, July 23, 2013 from 09:00 am till 12:00 pm.

Lectures

Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Josef A. Käs & Prof. Dr. Claudia Mierke
Mondays, 13:30 – 15:00 pm, Th.HS
Fridays, 09:15 – 10:45 am, Th.HS

Below, the lecture scripts are offered as PDF files for download. In order to access these files, a password is needed that you will get in the lecture or seminar.

Seminars

Tutor: Dr. Mareike Zink
Fridays, 11:00 am – 13:15 pm, SR221

In the seminars, every student has to give a 15 minutes talk. The oral presentation can be given freely, with PowerPoint or written on the board. If you cannot come the day of your presentation, you have to hand in a medical certificate.
The first seminar will be on April 12, 2013, where possible topics will be discussed and handed out to the students for preparation.

Lab Course

Every student has to participate in the three lab course experiments. The lab course will will take place during the regular lecture and seminar times. All students will be divided into three groups that are doing the experiments at different times.

  • Group 1: Monday, 01:30 pm (Meeting Point: Th.HS)
  • Group 2: Friday, 09:00 am (Meeting Point: Th.HS)
  • Group 3: Friday, 11:00 am (Meeting Point: SR221)
Please see the detailed schedule for the specific dates when the lab course takes place. The list of the groups will be sent to the students in the first week of the term.

If you cannot come to the lab course, you have to hand in a medical certificate from your doctor.

Students must be prepared for the experiments in order to participate in the lab course. Use the links below in order to download the tutorials for the experiments in form of PDF files.

Please carefully read the safety instructions of the first experimental description. You have to sign the safety instructions before the first experiment.

The lab course starts with a 15 minutes test for which you will get a mark. Additionally, you have to pepare protocols that must be submitted within 3 weeks after the experiment. You will get a mark for each protocol which counts (together with the mark for the written exam) for the final grade.
