Physical Chemistry History
In 1871 the first Chair for Physical Chemistry in
Germany was created. Between 1887 and 1897 Wilhelm Ostwald worked in
the so called second chemistry institute at the Brüderstr. 34 at the
university, which was also called the Physical Chemistry Institute. On
January 3rd, 1898, Ostwald inaugurated a new Institute at the
Linnestrasse 2, which was named Ostwald Institute for Physical and
Theoretical Chemistry and which became a Mekka for Physical Chemistry
in the first Half of the 20th centrury. Together with Nernst, and
Arrhenius Ostwald founded the field of Physical Chemistry. Ostwald was
awarded the Nobel Prize in 1909 for his groundbreaking work on reaction
equilibria and -rates and its implications for catalysis.
