At this hands-on workshop, we will look at some of the newest tools out there and how they can help you with your writing and what you need to watch out for. You’ll also learn ways to find that word you’re looking for and check whether or not a phrase is idiomatic.

As far as language learning and academic writing goes, you are lucky not to be living in 1987. Unlike prior to the Internet, you now have a wealth of tools at your fingertips that can help you to learn languages and improve your writing. At this hands-on workshop, we will look at some of the newest tools out there and how they can help you with your writing and what you need to watch out for. You’ll also learn ways to find that word you’re looking for and check whether or not a phrase is idiomatic. We will cover effective methods for doing Internet searches and look at helpful features of both mono- and bilingual dictionaries. We will also look at other useful online resources such as language blogs, style guides, and corpora. There will also be time during the workshop to practice using these tools and improve a piece of your writing. This workshop will be co-taught with Julia Hoffmann.
