Press release 2019/046 from

The Logistics Living Lab is Leipzig University’s very own logistics laboratory and belongs to the Faculty of Economics and Management Science. The Lab has moved into state-of-the-art premises in the city’s Mädler-Passage.

Divided into three sections – a showroom, a lounge for creative brainstorming, and a media area – an environment has been created to reflect real-world conditions, in order to promote innovation and creativity in research and development. The exhibits visualise trends in logistics in areas of research and work including last-mile logistics, sensor technology, and augmented and virtual reality. Transport robots drive around spaces, cargo bikes take care of last-mile deliveries, and virtual reality headsets can “resurrect” dinosaurs before your very eyes – but in future they could help to keep track of inventory levels. Take a look at our YouTube video for more information.

Additive manufacturing processes such as 3D printing can also be used in the laboratory. Taken together, the potential uses are really exciting. The Logistics Living Lab illustrates approaches to how we can use robotics and information technology to shape our future – and offers an exciting space for communication and brainstorming.

Professor Bogdan Franczyk and his colleague Benjamin Gaunitz look forward to welcoming the active participation of students from the fields of information systems and computer science, but also inter- and transdisciplinary ideas from researchers from other disciplines.
