Leipzig University is deeply shocked by the attack at Charles University in Prague, in which a gunman shot dead 14 people and injured 25 others on 21 December 2023. The Rectorate expressed its condolences to the university management in Prague today (22 December 2023).

The letter reads:

“On behalf of the Rectorate and Senate of Leipzig University, I would like to express my condolences at this time of grief and mourning. We mourn with you for the victims, sympathise with the bereaved and offer our utmost sympathy at this difficult time.

The centuries-long connection between our university and Charles University has resulted in a variety of joint projects and study programmes as well as numerous close personal links between individual students and professors to your university and your country. This tragic event was therefore all the more painful for us.

We wish you as a university a lot of strength as you come to terms with this terrible day. May the victims rest in peace and may time help you to recover from this tragedy. We all offer you our deepest sympathy, but also our unconditional solidarity.”
