Abstract

Matthias has studied meteorology at Leipzig University. He received his PhD in meteorology from Leipzig University in 2011. After a Post-Doc at Stockholm University, Sweden, from 2011 to 2014, Matthias went to the UK to join the University of Hertfordshire for an academic position as lecturer, and later, senior lecturer. Matthias has received a MOPGA Senior Research grant that brought him back to the Leipzig Institute for Meteorology at Leipzig University in 2019, where he defended his habilitation thesis in 2020. He is now heading the group “Aerosols and Clouds” which is focused on the investigation of aerosol, clouds, and aerosol-cloud interactions from observations with sensors on polar-orbiting and geostationary satellites.

In his research, Matthias uses data from active and passive remote-sensing instruments to study (i) the optical and microphysical properties of aerosol particles, (ii) tropospheric and polar stratospheric clouds, and (iii) anthropogenic effects on clouds.
