We are proud to mark a milestone this month with the 20th episode of the Arqus Knowledge Pills. Thank you for listening and a special thank you to all the past participants!

Arqus Knowledge Pills is a (monthly) podcast that presents research at the universities of the European University Alliance Arqus in a short and accessible way.

For this anniversary episode, Doriane Duvault (Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1) and Josephine Petzold (Leipzig University) interview José Manuel González Méijome, Professor of Optometry and Vision Sciences at the University of Minho, Portugal. He talks about myopia or short-sightedness, a widespread disease that currently affects more than 20% of the world's population - a figure that continues to rise! By 2050, this visual impairment could affect 50% of the population. Professor Méijome explains what it is and how it can be treated. He also discusses the effects of screen time and blue light on myopia and gives some advice on how to see better for longer.

Recent guests and topics include:

  • "What's the link between inequality and climate change?" with Jordan Everall from the University of Graz.
  • "Is there life on Mars?" with Cathy Quantin-Nataf from the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1
  • "Is philosophy relevant nowadays" with Sebastian Rödl from our university

You can find all episodes everywhere podcasts are available, e. g. on Spotify.
