Abstract

I am an art historian specializing in the art and architecture of medieval Europe, the Mediterranean and the Middle East with a focus on transcultural phenomena and cultural heritage.

My research encompasses the transition from the Greco-Roman to the (early) Christian world, medieval and modern Italy and Venice, Byzantium, the Islamic world and the architecture of Northern Germany during the 12th and 13th centuries.

My current research project studies the uses of ancient heritage in the Byzantine Empire, in Venice, and in Seljuk Anatolia through the lens of spolia. The project critically questions academia’s investment in strict categories of periods and cultures by focusing on the juncture of classical and late antique Roman artifacts and their post-classical reception in Islamic, Byzantine, and Western medieval contexts. I link the fragments from the past to issues of identity formation across cultures, thereby reshaping our understanding of the ownership of heritage and history.
