The MA International Sports Development is an international, English-language advanced master's degree program in the field of sports development.

Applications for this course of study are not possible for the winter semester 2024/25.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in sports management, sport economics or a similar degree.
  • Practical professional experience relevant to the topic, typically lasting at least one year.
  • Proficiency in English at the C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

The institute will check whether the above requirements have been met and then issue an official notification. This serves as proof that the candidate meets the relevant admission requirements.

The programme is offered entirely in English and is designed primarily for international students.

It has been conceptualised as a continuing education programme and is intended for students who have practical experience in the area of recreational sports development.

Contents

The programme is in a blended-learning format and has a focus on recreational sports development that offers you in-depth, research-based and hands-on knowledge.  At the same time, we will teach you skills and expertise that enable you to work in sport organisations at a regional, national and international level.

In addition, we will work with you on developing your personal and social skills.

The programme courses are delivered in a blended-learning format.

During the four semesters, students learn mostly in a virtual learning environment supervised by a team of international lecturers. In addition, we will meet for four short-term in-person periods of one to two weeks each. These sessions will usually take place in Leipzig, Germany, at the Faculty of Sport Science at Leipzig University.

Completing the MA programme in International Sports Development will enable you to embark on an exciting career path with numerous career possibilities in the profession of sports management. As a graduate you will be qualified for positions in recreational sports development and you will be qualified to apply your expertise in sports clubs and associations as well as in governmental, intergovernmental, non-governmental and private organisations.

Possible fields of work include:

  • Leadership positions in sports clubs (e.g. executive, management or administrative roles)
  • Executive positions in sports federations (e.g. secretary general, commercial board)
  • Management and administrative positions in the Olympic and Paralympic sports environment at the national level (e.g. at top-level federations or in National Olympic Committees (NOCs))
  • Management and administrative tasks in the public sector (i.e. institutions and offices of public sports administrations)
  • Management tasks in the private sector (i.e. in business as well as in advertising and marketing agencies in the sports environment)
  • Management and administrative tasks in (sports) politics
  • Management tasks with commercial sports providers
  • Freelance entrepreneurial activities in the sports and leisure industry
