Leipzig University’s Professor Annette Beck-Sickinger is one of the most distinguished female scientists in the world in the field of chemistry and chemical engineering, according to a recent award. Beck-Sickinger is one of twelve women worldwide to be honoured with the award in the 2023 list published by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC).

The IUPAC Distinguished Women in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering has presented women chemists of outstanding global significance every year since its inception in 2011. According to the IUPAC, awardees are selected based on excellence in basic or applied research, teaching, or management.

In addition to the biochemist Beck-Sickinger, this year the award goes to female chemists from Belgium, Brazil, China, India, Italy, Japan, Singapore, the United kingdom and the US. The awards will be presented at the IUPAC World Chemistry Congress in August 2023. The award winners were already announced to mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on 11 February.
