The binational master’s programme in German as a Foreign and Second Language in the Vietnamese-German Context is a joint programme between the University of Languages and International Studies at Vietnam National University, Hanoi, and the Faculty of Philology at Leipzig University / Herder Institute. The integrated binational MA programme with a double degree has a strong focus on both research and praxis.

Requirements

  • A first academic degree in the subject with a focus on German as a foreign and second language or a comparative degree programme or proof that this degree can be completed by the start of the master’s programme assuming studies continue in an orderly manner.
  • When applying to the degree programme at Leipzig University, applicants must show proof of the following qualifications according to the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference of Languages (CEFR):
    • in German at least the level C1 and
    • in English at least the level B2. Proof of this qualification is provided by submitting an English language certificate. 
  • By the time of the start the degree programme phase at Leipzig University, students of the University of Hanoi must show proof of the following qualifications according to the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference of Languages (CEFR):
    • in German at least the level C1 and
    • in English at least the level B2. Proof of this qualification is provided by submitting an English language certificate. 

 

Recognition of the results of other tests not listed here is done jointly by the Faculty of Philology and the ULSI.

The faculty reviews whether the requirements are met and then issues an official notification. This serves as proof that the candidate fulfils the admission requirements.

The following English language certificates for the levels stated in paragraph 2 are accepted for participation in the degree programme:

“International English Language Testing System” (IELTS). Minimum score: 5.5 points “Test of English as a Foreign Language” (TOEFL). Minimum score: 543 points on the ITP or 72 points on the iBT test “Test of English for International Communication” (TOEIC). The following minimum scores must be obtained in the various areas:

  • Reading: 385 points
  • Listening: 400 points
  • Speaking: 160 points
  • Writing: 150 points

“Cambridge Exam”. At least 160 points must be achieved in one of the following test formats: B1 Preliminary, B2 First, C1 Advanced, B1 Business Preliminary, B2 Business Vantage, C1 Business Higher “Aptis – Englischtest für Organisationen”. Minimum score: Level B2 GER “Vietnamese Standardized Test of English Proficiency” (VSTEP.3-5). Minimum score: 6.0 points.

The binational master’s programme in German as a Foreign and Second Language in the Vietnamese-German Context is an integrated binational MA programme with a double degree.

It combines the strengths of both participating partners: linguistics and applied linguistics, didactics, cultural studies and test research (Leipzig) with contrastive linguistics, translation studies and intercultural communication (Vietnam).

The programme begins in the winter semester. You will study three semesters in Leipzig and one semester at the University of Languages and International Studies (ULIS) at Vietnam National University (VNU) in Hanoi. The period abroad takes place in the second semester of study. In the third semester, you will start your master’s thesis and finish it in the fourth semester.

In addition to the compulsory internship, during the study stay abroad at the ULIS, you must take the following subjects:

  • Philosophy
  • Research Methods (in German)
  • Contrastive Linguistics (in German)
  • German Semantics
  • German Pragmatics
  • Intercultural Communication (in German)

During the study stay abroad at the ULIS, you can also choose to complete coursework in the following subjects:

  • Fundamentals of Vietnamese Culture
  • Vietnamese – Language Course 1
  • Vietnamese – Language Course 2

You can choose freely from the other modules offered by Leipzig University. The only restriction to your choice of elective modules is that you must cover all sub-disciplines (Didactics / Methodology, Linguistics, and Cultural and Linguistic Studies) in the course of your programme.

  • Binational master’s programme with a double degree, accredited in Germany and Vietnam.
  • Integrated study stay abroad at the partner university in the third semester, typically with a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for the stay abroad.
  • Identical programme structure at both locations.
  • Supervised internship at renowned institutions of language teaching and cultural exchange in Vietnam.
  • Specialised colloquia and tutorials for support in writing the master’s thesis.

Graduates of the binational master’s programme have a double degree that is accredited in both Germany and Vietnam. The degree programme provides professional qualification with well-founded knowledge in Didactics / Methodology, (Applied) Linguistics including Phonetics, and Cultural and Literary Studies. Your studies prepare you to work in many different professional fields, e.g., in the areas of

  • research and teaching,
  • education,
  • diplomatic service,
  • media and publishing,
  • cultural management and cultural exchange,
  • international organisations and
  • foreign trade relations.

A special emphasis is placed on imparting knowledge and skills that prepare students for work in the field of academic and cultural exchange between German-speaking countries and Vietnam.

In addition, students on the master’s programme will learn to conduct independent research in the field of German as a foreign language / German as a second language both at home and abroad.

  • Compulsory internship: Supervised internship at renowned institutions of language teaching and cultural exchange in Vietnam.
  • Mandatory period abroad at the University of Languages and International Studies (ULIS) at Vietnam National University (VNU) in Hanoi in the second semester.
