In light of recent events, please be aware of fraudulent and misleading emails in the name of Leipzig University asking potential applicants to transfer money.

A growing number of cases of people receiving so-called phishing emails have been reported to Leipzig University. People are receiving emails signed with the name “Walter Kaltenbach” – these emails are fake and appear designed to deceive. The sender introduces himself as a recruiter for Leipzig University, and offers support in the application process, among other things, and finally asks for money.

Please note:

The email address from which these emails are sent – jobs@universitat-leipzig.de – has nothing to do with Leipzig University. Leipzig University has not hired a recruiter. In some cases, fraudulent documents with the University’s logo and name are sent to the people targeted (see screenshot).

Applications at Leipzig University are always handled directly by the Department of Human Resources!

Leipzig University is investigating the matter and reserves the right to take further steps, including legal action.

If you have been affected, you can report suspicious emails to the Internet-Beschwerdestelle.de complaints office. On its English website, the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) has published helpful information on recognising phishing in emails and on websites. Anyone who has made a payment should report the matter to the local police station.

If you have any questions about job listings from the University, or if you are unsure whether an email you have received is from the University, please contact the Leipzig University contact person named in the job listing.
