Kurzprofil

Berend Isermann studied medicine in Würzburg (Germany), Bristol (England) and New Haven (US). After gaining his licence to practise medicine at Heidelberg University Hospital, he spent five years as a researcher at the Blood Research Institute in Milwaukee (US). Back in Heidelberg, he qualified as a specialist in internal medicine, endocrinology and laboratory medicine, as well as a diabetologist and clinical chemist. He was appointed Professor of Laboratory Medicine at the University of Magdeburg in 2011 and Professor of Laboratory Medicine at Leipzig University in 2019.

The group of Prof. Dr. Isermann focuses on protease-dependent signaling in sterile inflammation and cellular dysfunction. The clinical correlates in his studies are vascular diseases and premature vascular aging, with a focus on diabetes-associated vascular complications and kidney disease. In addition, he investigates vascular diseases associated with placental dysfunction and their impact on diseases later in life. His work provided important insights into biased signaling via protease activated receptors (PARs, a subgroup of GPCRs), the interplay of protease-dependent signaling in relation to cellular functions (mitochondrial and ER function), and mechanisms of sterile inflammation, such as the regulation of the inflammasome by coagulation proteases or the interaction of TF with IFNAR1. His work has advanced the evaluation of new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for vascular diseases.
